Writing Portfolio

Matt landed his first freelance writing assignment in 1995 writing for a small, weekly community newspaper in Dover, New Hampshire.

Over the next 20+ years, he worked tirelessly at his craft and today his work has appeared in newspapers, magazines, and on the web nationwide.

His work has allowed him to experience myriad unique opportunities including suiting up and entering a burning building alongside

professional firefighters, interviewing celebrities in music, film, and sports, securing a press credential from the White House to cover former President Barack Obama, and, dressing up as a bucket of blue cheese and participating in the legendary (at least in Buffalo) Chicken Wing Race during the seventh inning stretch of a Buffalo Bisons minor league baseball game.

Matt continues to work as a freelance journalist, and he shares those experiences with students as part of his school author visit presentations.

His writing has earned a number of state and national awards including six New York Press Association Awards for both his feature writing and his weekly column, “Just a Thought.”

Additionally, his book, Side-by-Side Baseball Stars: Comparing the Game’s Greatest Players, was selected as the 2015 Best Non-Fiction Book for Young Adults by the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA).
