Author visits in the Lone Star State

As I write this blog, I am sitting in the Southwest Terminal at the San Antonio International Airport, waiting for my flight home to New York. It has been an amazing week as I brought my author visit program to the students at San Antonio Academy of Texas and St. Anthony Catholic School.

We had a great day on Tuesday at San Antonio Academy, an all-boys private school located on a beautiful campus tucked into a residential neighborhood in San Antonio. The boys were excited for our time together and were engaged, asked great questions, and shared stories of their own reading and writing experiences.

In between sessions, I had the chance to join the boys for lunch, which is served family-style and it felt more like I was in a house than a cafeteria. My presentations were with the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades classes (with a bonus session for the second grade mixed in) and it was awesome to see how excited the boys were to learn about my career as a writer, my books, and some of my advice on how to succeed, regardless of what your career path might be.

With the bar set high, I headed to St. Anthony Catholic School on Wednesday. I was welcomed to their amazing library, which is set in its own building, a former home next to the school, with a welcome basket, and beautiful signs the students made. I began the day with kindergarten and first grade classes and ended the day with more than 125 students in 5th through 8th grades filling the cafeteria for a raucous closing session.

With my visits complete, my books signed and delivered, it was time to explore San Antonio. I took a stroll along the Riverwalk, and even took a guided tour along the river to learn more about the city's rich history. Of course, no visit to San Antonio would be complete without a stop at The Alamo. It was definitely surreal to be standing in front of the building that is on the cover of one of my books, "Ghosts of the Alamo." I finished off the evening with dinner in a wonderful local Mexican restaurant complete with a mariachi band.

I look forward to returning to Texas to bring my school author visits to many more schools, and I can say for sure the students at San Antonio Academy and St. Anthony have set the bar high!
